St Augustine Day 1

It was in the low 60’s this morning.  During the day it got more humid with on and off showers in the afternoon with a high in the upper 70’s.
We left the park a little before 0900 and headed to the Old Jail, Trolley stop #1 to redeem our voucher for tickets.  The Old Town Trolley makes 22 astops in and covers about 8 miles.  We thought we would ride for a while and get the layout of the city.  We got off at stop 17 and the

This site is a National Monument and part of the National Park Service.  Using Beryl’s Parks Pass we got in for free.  As they dug out for the fort the ground was place outside to create a barrier and a dry moat.  The fort is actually 30’ high and the walls are about 6’ thick.

As we were leaving the fort and heading for the trolley, the skies opened up.  We rode back to stop 1 and were going to call it quits and it stopped raining.  So we reboarded and headed to the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse at stop 5.

We continued walking down St George St (historic walking mall).  Beryl stoped at the Whettone’s Chocolate store.  For 5 pieces of chocolate about the size of a quarter they wanted $8.00. Around 1330 we stopped at the Florida Cracker Café for lunch. We both had shrimp Po'boy sandwiches.  We stopped at a candy store next to the restaurant.  Fudge was $18.00 a pound.  From here we headed back to Stop 1 and back to the park.
This is one of the Lion statues at the entrance to the Lion Bridge.  It is made from the same marble that Michelangelo used.

This Oak tree is over 600 years old and is located near the Fountain of Youth.  There is a Palm tree growing out of its center.

This is one of the hotels built by Flagler in the late 1800’s.  It had hot and cold running water an electricity.  You could rent a room for $200 a night but you had to rent it for the 4 month winter season.  It was booked full the day it opened.

Tomorrow the trolleys will not run between 0900 & 1100 due to a St Patrick’s Day parade.  Our remaining tickets are  for attractions all located near Stop 1 so we will head there tomorrow morning.
So far, St Augustine seems to be a tourist trap.
Catch ya later
